Preparing Your Property for a Concrete Pad, Walkway, or Sidewalk

A smoother concrete project starts before the truck arrives. Access, slope, base, reinforcement, and curing should be planned early.

Clear access and mark constraints

Crews need safe access for forming, concrete delivery, and cleanup. Gates, irrigation, pets, vehicles, utilities, and drainage paths should be identified before work starts.

Decide how the surface should drain

Concrete that looks flat still needs slope. A pad, sidewalk, or walkway should move water away from the home and avoid creating low spots that hold water.

Talk through finish and curing

A broom finish, smooth finish, exposed edge, or joint layout changes how the surface looks and performs. Curing time also affects when the space can be walked on.
